Recycling cycle for aluminum composite panels

The aluminum composite panel manufacturer 3A Composites, Sins / Switzerland, is establishing a recycling loop for aluminum composite materials in Germany together with the plastics recycling expert Pekutherm, Geisenberg.

Pekutherm, known for its collection systems, already has over 7,000 special collection containers in use in plants for technical plastics such as acrylic glass (PMMA). Aluminum composite panels are used for facades and advertising materials, among other things. Last year alone, 1,000 tons ofCO2 were saved by collecting aluminium composites. 1 ton ofCO2 is roughly equivalent to driving 5,000 kilometers in a mid-range gasoline-powered car.

Pekutherm is a leading player in plastics recycling and specializes in high-quality materials such as acrylic glass (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC). The closed-loop approach ensures the quality of the recycled materials and enables seamless processing without loss of quality. This proven approach is now being extended to enable the recycling of composite sheets.

With the Ecoboxes, Pekutherm offers foldable collection containers that are filled with residual and waste material at companies and then collected by Pekutherm. The common vision is to increase the recycling rate by collecting and recycling up to 1,000 tons of aluminium composite panels annually. This would result in aCO2 saving of 5,000 tons.

The collection of aluminum composite panels will initially take place in Germany and will then be extended to other European countries. Pekutherm and 3A Composites want to show that it is possible to integrate recycling into industrial production.
