Shaping a sustainable future and discourse

Shaping a sustainable future and discourse

From renewable energies, renewable raw materials, innovative materials and water technology to knowledge and resource management - together they contribute to a future-proof and sustainable world. The basic prerequisite for this is a social discourse in which new developments receive attention and are disseminated. With the UMSICHT Science Award, the Fraunhofer UMSICHT Association is honoring for the 14th time people who make this discourse possible with their work. We are now looking forward to receiving applications for the two categories of science and journalism.

Climate change and global crises show it: Humanity needs change. However, changes that directly affect our everyday lives can only be implemented in the long term with broad social acceptance - examples include sustainable agricultural products, packaging, mobility and energy. This is precisely why it is so important to strengthen the discourse on innovations and scientific achievements and thus build trust in them. The basis for this discourse can take various forms: While some achieve progress in their discipline and communicate it at specialist level, others prepare it for the general public in a way that is as comprehensible as possible. Only in this way can society as a whole participate in shaping a sustainable future.

Communication: science and society

Since 2010, the UMSICHT Sponsors' Association has awarded the UMSICHT Science Prize and honors people who make research results from the fields of environmental, process and energy technology - the core topics of Fraunhofer UMSICHT - accessible to society. The prize money is divided between an 8000 euro prize in the science category and a 2000 euro prize for journalistic work.

Science category

Particular attention is paid to the scientific level and the sustainable benefit of the work for the environment and society. Special emphasis is placed on the degree of innovation, market and application proximity as well as a clear and convincing presentation. In addition to dissertations, final reports, studies, but also white papers etc. are welcome.

Journalism category

In the field of journalism, the media form is open: Print, online, audio, video. The clear and comprehensible presentation of a socially and scientifically relevant topic as well as the independence of the statements are important evaluation criteria. Published individual and joint works will be judged.

Pure concepts, photographic works, books and unpublished works cannot be accepted for the UMSICHT Science Award in either category.

All published works dealing with environmental, process or energy technology are eligible. Scientific papers must not be older than two years, journalistic papers not older than one year.
