Important development in the semiconductor market: Umicore's Metal Deposition Solutions (MDS) business unit is taking over its Chinese partner Shinhao Materials LLC. The company from Wujiang, near Suhou, focuses on copper plating in the field of advanced packaging, a preliminary stage of semiconductor production. With this step, Umicore MDS is expanding its product range.

Umicore and Shinhao joined forces in 2019 to combine their strengths: Shinhao's technical expertise and intellectual property in copper additives with Umicore's global infrastructure as a supplier of high-quality materials technology. The global demand for semiconductors is growing steadily, driven by artificial intelligence (AI), increasing digitalization and rising demand for advanced packaging in industries such as automotive, telecommunications and consumer electronics. IntraCu is expected to benefit from applications in the fields of AI and display substrates. In order to meet demand in Europe and the USA, the manufacturing expertise is also expected to be used to produce at the MDS site in Germany.

In addition to the new research and production facility in Wujiang, other MDS research and production sites are located in Liechtenstein and Taiwan. These specialize in the production of high-tech thin films for electronic and optical applications.
