During the EDNANO 16 conference (Electrochemical Deposition of Nanomaterials) in Florence in April this year - which is also the annual European Academy of Surface Technology (EAST) conference - the Schwäbisch Gmünd Young Scientist Award 2025 was presented. This year, the prestigious prize went to Dr Eren Seckin from Istanbul Technical University for his outstanding work on a kinetic model to determine morphology transitions and growth kinetics of titanium dioxide nanotubes during the anodization of titanium in ethylene glycol-based electrolytes. The prize was presented to the beaming winner by the jury chairman Prof. Dr. Piotr Zabinski (far left in the picture), the Secretary General of the EAST, Dr. Andreas Richter (Research Institute Precious Metals and Metal Chemistry - fem, second from left) and the President of the EAST, Dr. Wolfgang Hansal (far right in the picture).

Dr. Seckin studied materials science and engineering at Istanbul Technical University and received his doctorate in 2022. The award was based on a highly regarded international scientific publication, which he published with his doctoral supervisor Prof. Mustafa Ürgen in 2024. In addition to an invitation to give a guest lecture at the EAST annual conference, the prize is endowed with a sum of money and the silver statuette of the Schwäbisch Gmünd unicorn.
The Schwäbisch Gmünd Young Talent Prize is awarded in the name of the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd, where the EAST has had its headquarters since its foundation in 1989. The city of Schwäbisch Gmünd has a long tradition of processing precious metals and has always supported EAST. Richard Arnold, Lord Mayor of Schwäbisch Gmünd, is also Vice President of EAST. The Schwäbisch Gmünd Young Talent Award was presented for the first time in 2017 and has since been awarded annually to promising young scientists.

The mission of the European Academy of Surface Technology (EAST) is to promote science, research, education and training in the field of surface technology and related areas throughout Europe in order to contribute to integration, understanding and friendship between people in Europe. Since March 2025, Dr. Wolfgang Hansal has taken over the role as President of EAST from his predecessor Prof. Peter Leisner.
