Some people are not good to eat cherries with

From free thinkers to team leaders and everything in between. There are always people with whom collaboration works wonderfully. And then there are others. The ones you would prefer to "throw in the garbage can".

Everyone in the team approaches tasks differently. This can sometimes put a real strain on nerves.

Why is that the case?

Because there are different personalities. One person likes things to be very strict and without deviations from the plan, while the other thinks quite outside the box and differently. One is shy, the other is a born leader.

As a team leader, it is your job to know the strengths of each employee in order to deploy him or her appropriately.

In my favorite book on leadership and management, "The Appointment" by Tom DeMarco, it says: "The four principles of good management are:

  • Choose the right people
  • Assign the right people to the right tasks
  • Motivate employees
  • Help the teams to take off and take off

(Everything else is administrative)

There are different personality types

Here is an initial rough classification of 4 personality types. You will encounter these in every team. And much more often unique mixtures of them.

By the way, there are many different classifications of personality types in psychology. Here is just the classification of 4 types to give you a brief overview as a first step. This is written in the masculine form as an exception today to make it easier to read: the classification naturally applies to all genders m/f/d.

After all, if you can assess your employees just a little better using this template-based classification and know what each and every one of them needs to deliver a high level of performance, then this will help you to prevent conflicts in the workplace. After all, the workplace is not always conflict-free. There are too many different expectations, wishes and goals to reconcile.

If you have someone in your team who really blossoms when they can develop creatively and think outside the box, then that person is a free thinker. They need to talk to others in order to develop ideas and inspiration. Harmony and team spirit are particularly important to them. With a free thinker, you develop innovative ideas and concepts that set you apart from the competition. But order and structure are unfortunately not among his strengths. Therefore, give him a rough framework with binding deadlines.

Does this type look familiar to you? The person first analyzes the current situation down to the smallest detail. The well-organized person loves statistics and working strictly according to the boss's specifications. With a well-organized colleague, projects are always completed on time. They work in a goal-oriented, reliable and precise manner. In the event of disagreements, he sulks and withdraws. The best way to motivate this type is to praise them calmly and appreciatively: "You are a very important team member for me. The rock of the team. Thank you for that."

The social person in the team has his fine antennae tuned to receive and senses disagreements immediately. With his empathetic nature, he uses his diplomatic skills to mediate and resolve conflicts within the team. As a result, he is highly valued by the team. He very often forgets his own sensitivities and sometimes finds it difficult to deal with a harsh tone in the team. It is therefore important that his colleagues encourage him to look after himself. And to keep reassuring him that they are a great team despite everything.

If anyone loves to set the tone in the team, it's the team leader. He has already drawn up a master plan before the start of a new project, which is then implemented. The most important thing for him is the greatest possible success of the entire team. The team leader always has a goal in mind and aligns their plan accordingly. However, a team leader is also very quick to pull out their elbows if something is not implemented as planned. It is therefore important to remind them that they are not solely responsible for everything and that they can hand things over to other team members.

Every team member needs something different to do a very good job. So that everyone is on the same page. This creates a good working atmosphere. This boosts productivity and you and your team achieve better results.
