Day of Light at the DPP research campus

Day of Light at the DPP research campus

The Day of Light was celebrated worldwide on May 16, 2023. Background: On May 16, exactly 63 years ago, Theodore Maiman succeeded in using a laser for the first time. The Digital Photonic Production (DPP) research campus in Aachen also uses bundled light in the form of laser beams as a key technology for the efficient and more sustainable production of the future.

The spectrum of light opens up numerous opportunities for research to address the needs of mankind. The scientists at the DPP research campus have therefore set themselves the task of conducting fundamental research into light-based and laser-based technologies: Through the laser and thus the tool of light, it is now possible to structure, ablate, apply, melt, join and cut.

In a unique strategic form of cooperation between research and industry, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), researchers work together under one roof and use a jointly created technical infrastructure to conduct basic research on an interdisciplinary basis. At the same time, a joint knowledge base, the DPP Open Know-how Pool, is being created, in whose three fields of competence - Digital, Photonic and Production - technologies, skills and components of laser technology are being systematically developed.
