Prof. Heuermann has been working for almost 20 years on the generation of plasmas using microwaves, i.e. waves in the frequency range of around 2.5 gigahertz (GHz). These plasmas are used for spark plugs, surgical devices and energy-saving lamps as well as for cleaning surfaces.
Until now, however, the generation of plasmas has always been linked to the radiation source - decoupling opens up completely new application scenarios. Another advantage is that the shape of the plasma can be influenced; depending on the intended use, it can be designed to be either beam-shaped or flat. A very high energy density can also be applied to any point. Applications are emerging from coating and furnace technology to spectroscopy and fusion technology.
