MCU with USB-C and buck-boost charge controller for embedded systems

Infineon's new EZ-PD PMG1-B1 device complements the EZ-PD PMG1 family of high-voltage microcontrollers (MCU) with USB-C power delivery (PD). PMG1-B1 PD-MCU is a single-chip solution with USB-C PD controller and microcontroller. It is suitable for battery-powered power tools, smart home and other devices. The chip is certified according to USB-PD-3.1. It is based on the EZ-PD stack, which ensures compliance with the USB-C and PD specifications. It combines a USB-C PD controller, buck-boost battery charge controller, 32-bit Arm Cortex-M0 processor with 128 KB flash memory MCU, and analog and digital peripheral circuits such as timers, UART, SPI, I²C interfaces and PWMs. It also features HV circuits such as VBUS-powered voltage regulators, FET gate drivers and fault protection circuits, overvoltage, overcurrent and VBUS-CC short-circuit protection.

PMG1-B1 PD supports input voltages from 4 to 24 V with a tolerance of 40 V and programmable switching frequency (150 to 600 kHz) for up to 100 W (20 V, 5 A) power at the USB-C port. This enables charging of 2- to 5-cell batteries in an integrated USB-C PD MCU solution. Infineon offers the ModusToolbox firmware development environment for application development. With the Board Support Package and the EZ-PD PMG1 Software Development Kit (SDK), no expert knowledge of the device resources is required.
