Double harvest - agrivoltaics with hot-dip galvanized steel

In order to achieve the goal of climate neutrality, a massive expansion of solar power production is required. This will require an enormous amount of land, which is only available in densely populated Germany if land can be used twice. This is precisely the idea behind agri-photovoltaics, also known as agri-PV. Agri-PV combines agriculture with solar power production on the same area.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection also wants to tap into the potential of agrivoltaics as an important element of the package of immediate energy measures ("Easter package"). The aim is to make agrivoltaics eligible for funding on all agricultural land.

As with many other solutions for the energy transition, hot-dip galvanized steel also makes an indispensable contribution to agrivoltaic applications. As a proven, durable and maintenance-free material in the agricultural and solar industry, it is used as a supporting structure for PV modules. Depending on the agricultural use, the modules of the Agri-PV systems are elevated up to six meters above the arable land to ensure that even large agricultural machinery such as combine harvesters can pass through without any problems. This can only be achieved economically with hot-dip galvanized steel constructions.

Agri-PV offers further advantages in addition to simultaneous agricultural use and electricity production. It counteracts the scarcity of arable land and contributes to the sustainable development of rural areas. Farmers have the opportunity to generate additional sources of income. Studies also show that Agri-PV can significantly reduce the negative consequences of climate change for agriculture, as the shading solar modules offer protection against extreme solar radiation, heat, drought and hail, thus improving the resilience of agricultural land.
