Renewable methanol for fuel cells

Renewable methanol for fuel cells

SFC Energy AG, a leading supplier of hydrogen and methanol fuel cells for stationary and mobile hybrid power solutions, and Wacker Chemie AG have signed a letter of intent to commercialize renewable methanol. SFC Energy intends to offer this methanol as a particularly environmentally friendly fuel for its methanol fuel cells, which are used privately, commercially and by public authorities as a decentralized power supply.

The planned Rhyme Bavaria project includes the construction of an electrolysis plant with a capacity of 20 megawatts. It will use electricity from renewable sources to produce green hydrogen, which will then be converted into methanol in a synthesis plant together withCO2 from existing production processes. The capacity of this plant is expected to be 15,000 tons per year.

Both hydrogen and methanol are important raw materials for chemical products such as silicones. For Wacker, the project is the first step in the transformation of chemical processes towards climate neutrality. Compared to the existing manufacturing processes, the new processes could reduceCO2 emissions by up to 100%. The investment for the plant complex is in the order of around 100 million euros. Commissioning could take place in 2025.
