In terms of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, carbon dioxide (CO2) from the combustion of fossil fuels and from industrial processes is one of the main causes of the greenhouse effect. On the other hand, carbon is an important raw material in the chemical industry. The new VDI status report "IndustrialCO2 cycles" shows howCO2 can be used as a material in cycles, which uses are already established and what new developments are available.
Because theCO2 sources are often not at the location where the carbon is further processed as a raw material, the authors of the status report, led by Prof. Dr. Ursula Katharina Deister, also look at the transport infrastructure, temporary storage and the risks involved in handling carbon dioxide. As the construction of technical facilities is not possible without social acceptance and the sale of products is not possible without customer acceptance, the VDI publication also addresses these aspects.
