embedded world 2023 - Full halls again in Nuremberg

Over 950 exhibitors from 44 countries presented their new products and solutions in all areas of embedded technologies at the embedded world Exhibition & Conference, from components, modules and complete systems to operating systems and software, hardware and software tools and services. Almost 27,000 people - over 50% more than in the previous year - visited the trade fair, over 40% of whom came from abroad.

"The dynamism of the embedded industry was palpable in the halls. Every year I am impressed anew by how open-minded and innovative this great community is," says Executive Director Benedikt Weyerer enthusiastically. "The many highly satisfied exhibitors are the best feedback for us," said Weyerer happily.

In addition to exhibitors from the field of embedded core competencies, a number of PCB and component manufacturers as well as tool and equipment providers were once again represented with exhibition stands.

The conferences and exhibitor forums were also very popular

The lecture program of the two parallel conferences counted 1659 participants and speakers from 46 countries. "Our approach of presenting the state of the art in a very clearly structured program and at the same time addressing new topics generated a very positive response from the participants, and the classes and sessions were extremely well attended," summarized Prof. Dr.-Ing. "The three keynotes were of course excellent, and Prof. Ali Hessami's presentation on AI Ethics was particularly on point." "The glow of the displays was reflected in the eyes of the display enthusiasts. Innovations in LCDs, OLEDs, micro-LEDs and energy-efficient reflective displays were the focus of the presentations and networking," summarized Prof. Dr. Karlheinz Blankenbach, Chairman of the 'electronic displays Conference'.

Visitor magnets in the halls were the three exhibitor forums with exciting expert panels, company presentations and start-up pitches - they were almost always filled to capacity.

The #women4ew networking event celebrated its premiere. Around 100 women and a few interested men discussed career paths, leadership qualities and the added value of diverse teams on Wednesday afternoon. The discussion and positive feedback resulted in numerous ideas for a continuation of the format next year.

The third day of the fair was dedicated to the Student Day. What makes the embedded community special? What can I write my thesis on? What exciting jobs do the exhibitors offer? With these and many other questions, around 600 students mingled at the trade fair on Thursday and gained an impression of the fascination of the embedded sector from the keynote speech by Dr. Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO of Bosch Sensortec, among others.

Start-ups scooped the embedded award 2023

Bei der embedded award 2023-PreisverleihungOutstanding innovations in the field of embedded system technologies were once again honored atthe embedded award2023awards ceremony atembedded world 2023. Three out of eight winners of the embedded award 2023 are start-ups. The two new categories Artificial Intelligence and SoC/IP/IC Design complement the familiar embedded award categories Hardware, Tools, Software, Embedded Vision, Safety & Security and Start-up. "The fact that two start-ups won in the two categories with the most submissions - Hardware and Software - shows the high level of innovation with which start-ups are enriching the embedded industry," says jury president Prof. Dr.-Ing. The winners of the embedded award 2023 are

  • AITAD in the Artificial Intelligence category
  • GreenWaves Technologies in the Hardware category
  • Analog Devices in the Embedded Vision category
  • Infineon Technologies in the Safety & Security category
  • MIPS in the SoC/IP/IC Design category
  • Emproof in the Software category
  • Epishine in the Start-up category
  • Slint in the Tools category

The next embedded world Exhibition & Conference will take place from April 9 to 11, 2024- gk-

NFC-based sensor controller with energy harvesting function

Infineon presented the new NFC-based sensor controller NGC1081 with energy harvesting function as a new product at the trade fair. Near Field Communication (NFC) is an international transmission standard based on RFID technology for the contactless exchange of data via electromagnetic induction using loosely coupled coils over short distances of a few centimeters and a maximum data transmission rate of 424kBit/s. As a single-chip solution that can be easily integrated into a smartphone, the NGC1081 enables the IoT industry to develop cost-effective, small and smart edge computing/sensing devices. Product Manager Dr. Qi Zhu introduced the sensor controller in his presentation 'Build battery-free actuation and sensing IoT devices with Infineon's NFC energy-harvesting technology' daily at the TechTalks at Infineon's booth. For the PLUS editorial team, he once again took the time to explain and even demonstrate the sensor controller.

Ein mögliches Einsatzgebiet des NGC1081-Chips: Komfortable Steuerung und Auslesung eines BlutdruckmessgerätsA possible area of application for the NGC1081 chip: Convenient control and readout of a blood pressure monitor

The sensor controller is based on a low-power ARM Cortex-M0 microcontroller and integrates several key components: an NFC front end compliant with the ISO14443 Type A standard and a motor control actuator driver that uses an H-bridge circuit with a current driving capability of up to 250 mA. The NGC1081 also has a sampling unit based on a 12-bit SAR ADC with four analog inputs and a 10-bit DAC with one analog output. The sampling unit also includes an I2V converter and an integrated temperature sensor, which offers an accuracy of ± 0.3 °C in the temperature range from 0 °C to 45 °C and ± 0.4 °C in the range from -20 °C to 0 °C and 45 °C to 85 C.

Integrated into a cell phone, components can be controlled and supplied with power. This allows blood pressure measurements to be monitored, as well as medical plasters, intelligent thermostats and sensor inlays. Even security locks of considerable weight can be opened by smartphone - a replacement for a bunch of keys and just as secure thanks to near-field communication at close range. However, as Dr. Qi Zhu demonstrated, this requires a few seconds until sufficient power can be transmitted. Nevertheless, this example in particular demonstrates the incredible possibilities that chip integration can offer.
