The new STNRG011A device from STMicroelectronics combines a multi-mode (transition-mode and DCM) PFC (power factor correction) controller with feed-forward of the input voltage, a THD optimizer and frequency limiter and a high-voltage two-sided controller for the resonant LLC half-bridge with time-shift control. Furthermore, a start-up generator for 800 V (with line-sense function and X-cap discharge according to IEC 62368-1 for low standby power) as well as a complex digital engine for optimum operation of three blocks. STNRG011A operates with AC mains input. Stable burst mode at light load ensures fast response and adaptive protection of the half bridges against brownout.
The new controller comes in a 20-pin SO package. This offers an advanced solution for power supplies for 90 to 300 W with power factor correction and overload management with stringent requirements for energy-efficient operation. The power system and control algorithms are controlled by an 8-bit core with dedicated, fast peripheral units. Optimized digital algorithms are implemented together with analog IP (intellectual property). This ensures very good performance, BOM (bill of materials) optimization and robust operation. The digital algorithms are stored in an internal ROM.
The application parameters can be stored in an NVM (non-volatile memory) during the production phase to enable configurability and calibration. The device can communicate externally via a 2-pin UART, which enables a monitoring function, black box storage in an external E2PROM and software patch upload.
