Chip markets continue to grow: by 13.9% in 2022, 4.6% in 2023

The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization based in Morgan Hill, California, revised its market figures published in the second quarter on 22 August - and significantly downwards. The historically outstanding growth of the global semiconductor industry in 2021 will therefore not continue to the same extent this year and next. However, following last year's growth of 26.2%, growth will still be in double digits in 2022, reaching 13.9%. In 2023, it is expected to be a modest 4.6%, with a total market volume of USD 633 billion.

According to WSTS, this applies to all geographical regions with established semiconductor industries. The strongest growth this year will be in North and South America: by 23.5%, Europe by 14% and Japan by 14.2%. Asia-Pacific is bringing up the rear (at a high level) with an increase of 10.5%. The various segments of the semiconductor market present a mixed picture: logic chips (with a share of around 30% of the overall market) are up 24.1% this year. The analog segment is growing by 21.9%. Optoelectronics is performing surprisingly weakly at +0.2% - equivalent to stagnation.

"Global semiconductor sales were robust in the second quarter of 2022, with overall year-on-year growth in all major regional markets and across all product categories," comments John Neuffer, President and CEO of the US Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). "Growth has slowed in recent months, falling below 15% in June for the first time since February 2021. Sales in North and South America lead all other regions. They have grown by 29%."

Founded in 1986 as a non-profit organization, WSTS is something like the official statistics of the global semiconductor market with monthly figures and trends. All global industry associations, such as the SIA and the European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA) in Brussels, contribute to the WSTS figures and publish the results. WSTS is made up of four regional organizations (chapters) for the member companies in America, Europe, Japan and Asia-Pacific. The global administrator and contact person since June 2022 is Tobias Pröttel in 85457 Wörth (+49 177 388 1977).
