New X-ray inspection system for testing assembled circuit boards

Hartmann Electronic tests every circuit board that leaves the company using various methods. These include an AOI island, two flying probe testers and a functional test system. The company, which produces circuit boards for military applications, aerospace and security technology, previously had the X-ray inspection carried out externally.

As more and more customers are demanding X-ray inspection, the component manufacturer has now invested in its own X-ray inspection system from Unicomp via its sales partner SmartRep.

Following an online demo at SmartRep, Hartmann Electronic opted for a 90kV closed X-ray tube and the 8200MAX system. Manual X-ray inspection is sufficient for Hartmann's high-mix/very-low-volume production requirements. The new system can be used, for example, to check whether the IPC requirement is met for each pin or whether there are any air inclusions. The PCBs are analyzed manually and the inspection is documented with X-ray images. At the customer's request, an X-ray report can be produced.
