Industry 4.0: How networked systems can be tested in advance

The new guideline VDI/VDE 4004 Sheet 1 provides the basics and methodology for testing networked Industry 4.0 systems. I4.0 systems are defined as systems for production in the manufacturing and process industry that involve a high degree of networking and the interaction of several I4.0 components. The guideline presents a procedure for the rough planning of test processes and outlines the method based on the W questions. It also contains a form for rough-cut planning and examples of its use, both from the operator's and the provider's perspective.
In a dynamic, networked environment, testing the correct function is a challenge. Changing environmental conditions due to ad hoc networking, constant reconfigurations due to small batch sizes and software updates in the field are indicators that testing during operation is becoming increasingly important. In order to structure the testing of such systems and thus ensure comprehensive testing, VDI/VDE 4004 Sheet 1 presents solutions for overcoming these challenges and illustrates them using specific use cases. This provides users with guidance when testing future automation systems.
