Oerlikon has acquired D-Coat GmbH, a German provider of diamond coating technologies. The acquisition expands Oerlikon Balzers' portfolio in the area of surface treatments, especially for cutting tools used in the aerospace and automotive industries. D-Coat GmbH was founded in 2006 and is one of the technology leaders in the field of diamond coatings for cutting tools. This is especially true for carbon fiber reinforced polymers used in structures of aircraft, ships, vehicles and other areas where high reliability during long-term operation is required. D-Coat is a global supplier of coating applications for major aircraft manufacturers. D-Coat provides diamond coatings using the HFCVD (Hot Filament Chemical Vapor Deposition) method. The deposition of diamond coatings produced using HFCVD is suitable for coating surfaces, three-dimensional base bodies and internal diamond coating. Applied to tools, machine components or electrodes, these coatings offer resistance to most chemical substances, low coefficients of friction even in conditions of poor lubrication and maximum wear resistance even in contact with abrasive materials.
