At the beginning of 2023, the European Chemicals Agency ECHA announced the addition of nine substances to the so-called candidate list. The best-known substance among them is melamine, which is often used in the form of resins for camping tableware, among other things. It has now been classified as a substance of very high concern (SVHC), according to the DEKRA chemicals experts. Melanin resin is also used for surface coating, but in processes other than electroplating. The resin is pressed in the so-called HPL and CPL processes.
According to the DEKRA experts, the information obligations under REACH Art. 33 and the notification obligation for the SCIP database in accordance with Section 16 f) of the Chemicals Act now also apply to such products. Melamine was classified in the 18th ATP (Adaption to Technical Progress) of the CLP Regulation as target organ toxicant STOT RE 2 (urinary tract) and carcinogenic Carc. 2. The reason for its inclusion in the candidate list is that it is of particular concern for both human health and the environment. Melamine has established itself as a porcelain substitute for camping tableware, for example. Melamine can also be found in other products, such as construction products, textiles, cosmetics, cleaning agents, electrical appliances and toys. With the inclusion on the candidate list, companies must inform their commercial customers about the presence of melamine in the product as soon as a threshold value of 0.1% is exceeded.
