VP 4200: New silicon dioxide reduces biocide content in anti-fouling coatings

Evonik introduces a new silica grade from the AEROSIL® product group: VP 4200 is a structure-modified silica with free OH groups that enables the use of more environmentally friendly, copper oxide-containing anti-fouling coatings.

The innovative product is tailor-made for both CDP and SPC systems (CDP = Controlled Depletion Polymer; SPC = Self-Polishing Coating).

VP 4200 forms a chemical complex with Cu2O, whereby the release of the biocide is controlled.

Formulations with only ten percent by weight of copper(I) oxide and four to six percent by weight of VP 4200 result in the same performance as the standard type with up to 50 percent by weight of Cu2O.

VP 4200 is characterized by a relatively low thickening effect, so that larger solids contents can be easily achieved in the respective systems, especially in combination with TEGO® Dispers 1010.
