In November 2020, the ZVO developed a position paper on the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability in favor of a science-based approach to EU chemicals regulation. The ZVO welcomes the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability published by the EU Commission on October 14, 2020. In particular, it considers the planned adjustment of the restriction and authorization procedure under REACH to be sensible in view of the need to simplify and reduce bureaucracy.
It also supports the EU Commission's plan to improve the scientific understanding of chemicals, but criticizes the strategy's abstract and unmeasurable targets as well as blanket bans on substances instead of technically determined limit values. Furthermore, the ZVO questions the appropriateness of the "one substance, one assessment" principle.
In view of the unprecedented challenges posed by the coronavirus crisis, the strategy also comes at an inappropriate time. The entire ZVO position paper is available at www.zvo.org/publikationen.
