Mr. Öztürk, when you look back on your master craftsman training: How do you see the time now?

The master craftsman school was an intensive and instructive time for me. I learned a lot both professionally and personally. It wasn't always easy to combine work, family and vocational school - especially with two children. My wife didn't have an easy job during this time either and gave me a lot of support. It was precisely this support from my family that gave me the strength to keep going and persevere. The lecturers at the technical college for electroplating technology in Schwäbisch Gmünd were also a big plus: they not only explained the material in an understandable way, but also taught it in a motivating way.

Where did you start as a master craftsman and what are your tasks today?

I started my training as a surface coater at Thales in Ulm in 2005 and after two years of further training, I became a master electroplater. I have been working there as a foreman since January 2025. Thales develops and produces state-of-the-art systems for satellite communication, among other things, and employs over 500 people. A total of 18 skilled workers work in our department. My aim is to gradually take on more responsibility and develop into a group leader in the long term. I already manage the team, coordinate processes and support the organization. As a foreman, I can also contribute even more to quality assurance and the further training of my colleagues.

What coatings are available at Thales?

We carry out processes such as copper plating, galvanic and chemical nickel plating, bright silver plating and bright and fine gold plating. This gives the components reliable corrosion protection or a conductive surface, which is crucial for their function.

What motivated you to become a master craftsman?

My biggest motivation is my family and especially my two children. My eldest son is now starting an apprenticeship as a construction mechanic in September. I want to be a role model for him and show him that you can achieve a lot with commitment, determination and hard work. At the same time, it is important to me to develop professionally, to take on even more responsibility and to pass on my professional knowledge to other employees in the electroplating department.
