How to make the right decision quickly!

How to make the right decision quickly!

Do you know that too? You have so many options! But you only have to choose ONE way. And which one, please, is the RIGHT one?

How do you do that? Making the right decision quickly? I'm sure you've asked yourself this question before. Because why else would you be reading this article?

Are you on a pilgrimage? Have you already tried it?

Today I'm going to tell you a small part of my pilgrimage story.

It's about (to put it mildly - many!) uncertainties. Countless questions that need to be answered. What is right and important when choosing the contents of my rucksack? About finding the best starting point. When should I start? A cheap hostel with free snores or an expensive hotel without the typical smell of sweat? On foot or by bike? There is also the option of hiring a donkey ...

I quickly decided my first and most important priority: I want to go to Spain! More precisely, to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. I quickly clarified my DESTINATION - the WHERE to go.

Now it's all about the HOW. My requirement: it should be as efficient as possible. To save energy, costs, nerves, effort and time. My strategic brain sends its regards!

You want to know how I planned and started my pilgrimage?

My strategy is: quick and easy to implement.

I start in Ulm. Not by train to the nearest airport. No, on foot along the pilgrimage route from Ulm Minster. Conveniently, it's almost on my doorstep. I can always take 1-2 days off and just set off. My first big stage goal, my first milestone, is to reach Constance within 10 days.

Walking ... That feels good! For my body and my soul!

I've done it and I'm so proud of myself! I like to celebrate my successes. When I have achieved a goal, a milestone, then I celebrate. To prepare myself and my subconscious for the next stages. Because that's when my brain releases the happiness hormone serotonin. My body is flooded with it - this is my legal doping for my happiness level. And my self-efficacy for the next steps is strengthened.

By the way: I successfully achieved my goal and treated myself to a spa day with a view of Lake Constance and the Alps.

You ALWAYS decide!

Even if you can't decide, decide not to decide.

Remember, the constant brooding costs you a lot of energy! It makes you dissatisfied, unhappy and sometimes even aggressive.

The time and energy you save by making a quick decision can be put to much better use for other things!

Did you already know?

People who make decisions can never have all the information. But a decision still has to be made. This is how our politicians are currently dealing with the war in Ukraine, the mobility of the population, the energy supply, the shortage of skilled workers and many other issues.

Entrepreneurs in the electroplating industry are feeling the same way: exorbitantly high energy costs have to be met. REACh and the Green Deal are keeping you awake. The same goes for the lack of skilled workers. The bureaucratic jungle really makes you wonder whether you want to put up with all this! Does it perhaps make sense to stop production after all? Outsource it? No, not to other European countries, but to other continents?

On the other hand, valuable jobs would be lost. Dependence on China, India and co. is increasing. The last pandemic has shown its claws and made us aware of the incalculable effects of globalization.

The fact remains

The hallmark of an outstanding manager is the ability to come to justifiable conclusions and practicable solutions despite limited knowledge and very little preparation time.

But how does that work? It's not a sixth sense, just experience.

Especially in uncertain times like these, gut instinct and the accumulated knowledge of many years of experience make the difference.

What distinguishes an outstanding manager is the ability to come to justifiable conclusions
and practicable solutions despite limited knowledge and very little preparation time.

According to a study,decision-makers need

  • risk competence
  • a good understanding of numbers
  • an overview - even of limited facts and
  • good intuition.

As a rule, it is not possible to justify why exactly the gut feeling, this condensed experience, leads or will lead to better results despite all the rational bases for decision-making.

And it is also an advantage if you already have a few more years under your belt, because then you have already (successfully) mastered many a crisis!

My tip for you today

If you find it difficult to make a decision, I recommend Mel Robbins' 5-second rule:

According to Mel Robbins, you can make any decision within 5 seconds if you realize that you are starting to hesitate.

"Should I really call it a day and go home for dinner? Or keep working for another 2 hours, because I'm actually in the flow?" 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and you're already packing up, on your way to your car and happy to spend time with your loved ones again.

Would you take part in a pilgrimage together? Nothing specific is planned yet - but I have a few ideas.
