On May 13, BG Nuremberg took 30 participants on an excursion to KE-TEC GmbH in Betzigau in the Allgäu region. The company, which is run by Managing Director Roland Weixler, has been in existence for 18 years. It deals with batteries of all sizes. On the premises, 50 employees now try out, develop, test, monitor, program and analyze.
The group of visitors from BG Nuremberg gained an insight into the world of battery technology and the possibilities for testing and analyzing lithium-ion batteries. Starting with the raw materials, the structure of different batteries, where they can be used and the performance of modern storage modules and systems through to safety aspects and the transformation of the power supply in Germany, everything was covered. Visitors were able to get very close to the modules and take a very close look at the structure of different battery cells. The laboratories include a computer tomograph, which can be used to X-ray and identify many objects. The main focus here is on batteries, but a wide range of workpieces can also be examined for defects. The group was able to see how a battery discharges in a short time after damage. In the short film, the smoke development and material ejection of the damaged cell could first be viewed in super slow motion and how the module then ignites itself. At least as interesting were the company's own storage modules, which are powered by several photovoltaic systems. Although this cannot cover all the electricity requirements, the savings following this investment can be enormous.
