Strategic alliance for the further development of 3D lithography systems

Multiphoton Optics GmbH is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Heidelberg Instruments Mikrotechnik GmbH, one of the international market leaders in laser lithography. This bundling of development power and technologies for the production of microstructures underlines the global importance of German research, development and production of direct-writing laser systems for microstructuring.

MPO is a pioneer of two-photon lithography and has developed a high-performance exposure system for 3D printing down to the sub-micrometer range. MPO thus closes a gap between conventional laser lithography, on which the core business of Heidelberg Instruments Mikrotechnik GmbH is based, and the nanostructuring technology (t-SPL) added three years ago in the Heidelberg Instruments Nano division. Together with MPO, the position in the field of micro-optics and structured surfaces is to be expanded. MPO's current specialty is the production of 3D free-form surfaces and 3D structures of any shape, with a focus on micro-optics. In research and development, the main focus is currently on manufacturing processes using two-photon polymerization (2PP) as well as application-specific software and hardware modules.

Two-photon polymerization (TPP) is a maskless direct laser writing technology. In TPP, the light-matter interaction only takes place within the volume of the focused laser spot.
